    Gem of the week: BioLite

Fire converted to electricity - sweet idea! According to BioLite, nearly half the world’s population cooks over open wood fires but such fires are inefficient, waste energy and create toxic smoke that’s a hazard both to the environment and to human health. BioLite stoves use a fraction of the smoke, capture excess heat to generate electricity to generate electricity for other purposes – like charging your iPhone!

Genius design, a plug and socket that lets you set a timer to save energy and avoid overcharging your devices. Why hasn’t this been invented before? http://bit.ly/sBuEvt

Jakarta, a city of 10 million people, plans to double the number of street lights. To cut expenses, researchers are developing a green lighting system that bathes vehicles in a pool of light but switches off after they’ve gone.
Currently, the city has over 200,000 street lights, which cost the equivalent of about $17 million dollars to run in 2007.
